Getting Pregnant with Donor Sperm: Artificial or Natural Insemination?
Natural Insemination is becoming a popular choice for those women who can’t afford clinic fees, or who want a child that was created in a more natural environment, with a man they know something about. The Donors are usually sourced from websites, unless you decide to ask someone you already know.
If you want to conceive using donor sperm, then you need to think about the pros and cons of each method.
AI In a Clinic
The difference between having the treatment in a clinic is that all the male donors have been thoroughly tested for genetic conditions, illnesses that could affect a new baby and sexually transmitted diseases.
Sperm Quality and Movement
The clinic will look at your sperm to make sure it is healthy and that your sperms motility (the rate it moves) is good.
Infectious Diseases
You can’t donate to a clinic if you have HIV or Hepatitis, as both these diseases could be passed on to the unborn child. You will also be tested for Cystic Fibrosis and other diseases such as Ty Sachs disease, depending where you come from.
Sexual Transmitted Diseases
The clinic will not take sperm from a donor who has any sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhoea or chlamydia.
Costs
However, clinics costs money. According to the Advanced Fertility Centre of Chicago you can expect to pay between $11,000 and $12,000 dollars for treatment. This includes investigation and diagnosis, drug therapy, the AI procedure and a hospital stay if necessary.
Natural Insemination at home
Buying frozen sperm and using it to inseminate yourself at home is a cheaper option than going through a clinic. The Danish group Cryos send frozen sperm to locations all around the world.
Natural insemination means that you do have sex with the man you are using as a sperm donor. You can find males willing to become sperm donors on the internet, but it is better if you can get to know them first. Success rates are said to be higher than using artificial insemination, which is one reason why it is becoming more and more popular.
Testing
The donor should be willing to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases and sperm quality and the more tests you have, the surer you will be that you are creating a healthy child. These tests can be done at any private fertility clinic, but they will cost money.
Positions
Whilst having sex to become pregnant, the best position is the missionary position or doggy style as the penis is able to penetrate further up towards the cervix. After sex stay where you are with your legs propped up on a pillow or a cushion for about half an hour. Many women say that this helps the sperm on their way.
Keep Safe
However, unlike a clinic there are risk so keep safe when you are going to be alone with a donor. Tell someone close to you where you are going to be and make sure the donor knows that someone else is aware of your whereabouts.
You should go for the method that suits you best Relax and hopefully the result will be a much longed for baby.
